ABOUT
Sebastian Acker (b. 1981, East Germany) is a contemporary artist based in Berlin. In his multi-disciplinary practice, he interrogates the idea of the “natural” and the “artificial” by creating intricate, speculative scenarios. With the aid of visual technology and remote fieldwork, Acker explores the hidden stories of natural resources, while examining cultural constructions of an untouched wilderness – a process the artist terms “unlearning nature”. Through investigations into the myths of immateriality in the virtual world he opens up a space for the observer to reconsider the relationship between the human and the non-human.
He has exhibited and screened at Kunstverein Dresden (solo, 2022), Galerie Schloss Biesdorf Berlin ‘Residenzpflicht’ (2023), Manifesta 12 in Palermo ‘May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way’ (2018) and Institute of Contemporary Arts in London ‘Diving into a Teacup’ (2018), amongst others.
Grants and awards include the Arts Council England Grant, the Neustart Kultur Grant from Deutscher Künstlerbund, the Stiftung Kunstfonds Publication Grant, the Arts and Humanities Research Council Scholarship and the 20 Seconds for Art Award by KÖR Austria at the Vienna Viennale.
His first artist book Traces of Other Places was published by Kerber in 2021.
Sebastian Acker studied at Chelsea College of Arts before completing an MFA
at Slade School of Fine Art, both in London.
